Rally Speech
My name is Jamie Hitel and together with my wife and three children I moved to Ohio five and a half years ago to become Director of Music at St Paul’s Episcopal Church on West Market Street here in Akron – undeniably one of the best places to live in the whole of the United States of America.
The choir program at St Paul’s Episcopal Church is a good example of a community organization which benefits directly from the high quality of music education given to our children in the Akron Public School system.
Most of the young singers in the choir program at St Paul’s are students in the Akron Public School system. When they try out for our program, it is easy to spot Akron Public School children. They are the ones who have already benefited from the excellent instruction of both specialized music instructors and class teachers at elementary level. Not only do these Akron Public School students display a high degree of musical understanding, but they also display motivation, diligence and an understanding of what it is to be part of a team. Let me tell you this: without these fundamental qualities, my job and the job of my colleagues would be much harder, and the high standards we set ourselves would be impossible to achieve.
So I’d like to thank the hard work of those teachers who make this kind of community program possible – a program like many others in the Akron area which gives back to the community, both through enhancing the local culture of today and equipping our young people for positions of leadership tomorrow.
On Tuesday, we not only get the chance to support our teachers.
We get to BE the teachers, by teaching our children a lesson about the things that matter.
Vote for the levy. Vote against those lawmakers who undermine the system or refuse to reform it. Show our children that we are smart enough to know the difference. Show our children that we care about their future, and the future of this great city.
